The thing is that the ancient Egyptians did have some bizarre beliefs-- especially the Pharaohs. For instance, in those days the slaves were responsible for harvesting the fields. Thus, if there was a poor yield, the slaves were often times put to death. This left them in a bad way, with nobody to turn to except the goddess of harvest, Renenutet. They would hold two festivals per year to honor her-- one when the crops were planted and one when the the crops ripened.
During these festivals, the goddess' shrine was placed in open-air . It was given offerings of anything from wine to beer to bread, even blood sacrifices.
